Travel in 2026: What I’m Seeing in the Industry Right Now

If you’ve been watching global events unfold, it’s easy to assume the travel world has hit pause. But from where I sit, that couldn’t be further from the truth. People are still traveling, still booking, and still dreaming about their next getaway. What is changing is how they’re traveling and where they feel most comfortable going.

Here’s what I’m seeing across the industry right now.

Travelers Are Still Going; They’re Just Choosing Different Routes

Even with tensions and disruptions in parts of the world, demand for travel hasn’t slowed. What has shifted is the way people are getting from point A to point B.

Many travelers are intentionally avoiding routes that take them through the Middle East, especially when it comes to long-haul connections and even if it means a slightly longer travel day.

Safety and peace of mind are driving the decision-making more than ever.

Trending Destinations: Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia

Some regions are seeing a noticeable surge in interest:

  • Japan continues to be one of the hottest destinations in the world with culture, food, scenery, and a strong sense of safety.
  • Australia and New Zealand are having a major moment, especially for travelers craving wide-open spaces and bucket‑list experiences.
  • Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland) is trending for its natural beauty, design-forward cities, and reputation for stability.

These destinations feel both exciting and secure, which is exactly what many travelers are looking for right now.

Flexibility Is the New Non‑Negotiable

If there’s one universal shift, it’s this: travelers want options.

I’m seeing more people:

  • Purchase travel insurance — not as an afterthought, but as a must-have.
  • Choose refundable hotel rates instead of the cheapest nonrefundable option.
  • Book flights with no change fees, even if it costs a bit more.
  • Prioritize flexible cancellation policies for tours and activities.

Travelers aren’t necessarily spending less. They’re spending smarter, building in wiggle room so they can pivot if needed.

Peace of Mind Matters More Than Price

For years, the lowest fare or the best deal drove most decisions. Now, travelers are willing to pay a little extra for:

  • A route that feels safer
  • A hotel they can cancel
  • A flight they can change
  • Insurance that protects their investment

It’s not about fear, it’s about control. People want to feel confident that if something shifts in the world, their plans don’t have to fall apart.

My Advice: Trust Your Gut

This is the part I tell every client, every time: If a destination doesn’t feel right for you right now, choose somewhere else.

There is no award for pushing through anxiety on vacation. Travel should feel exciting, empowering, and restorative, not stressful. Sometimes the simplest solution is a destination change. The world is big, beautiful, and full of options.
